Following on from the new pictures yesterday (see bottom of the article), Marvel has punched the Guardians Of The Galaxy
marketing campaign up a gear, sending Chris Pratt to US talk show Jimmy
Kimmel Live with the trailer, which has now arrived online.
With Marvel gambling that less comic book-savvy audiences have been primed by Thor and the rest to accept more out-there concepts, Guardians
sends us hurtling into deep space to meet a very different gang of
heroes. Well, we say heroes… We’re introduced to Peter Quill (who would
rather everyone called him Star-Lord), played by Chris Pratt, taken from
Earth at age nine and in possession of a mysterious McGuffin orb. He’s
grown up into a cheeky, daring adult who pilots a ship called the
Milano.
In a prison, he meets an unusual suspects line-up of
aliens including Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a green-skinned assassin, Drax
The Destroyer (Dave Bautista), a hulking warrior, talking tree Groot
(Vin Diesel) and gruff warrior Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper).
Yes, a walking, talking, gun-toting Raccoon. And a tree-man. And
Peter Serafinowicz working with John C. Reilly! This is the wild world
distilled from the Guardians comics by writer/director James Gunn and is
shaping up to be a whole lot of fun.
The trailer is, for the most
part, what was shown at Comic-Con last year, with some new footage of
Rocket, Groot and the rest and with Pratt channelling his inner Han
Solo. Everything gives off the feel of classic sci-fi serials welded to
the Marvel sensibility for the requisite thrills and universe-building.
It all comes across as big and a little daring and will hopefully live
up to all that it promises. We’ll see when Guardians Of The Galaxy hits UK cinemas on August 1.
